Wardrobe Cleansing

Wardrobe Cleansing

We’ve all heard about Spring Cleaning and even though Spring technically doesn’t start until March 20, what better way to start off the month, than starting fresh! Here are some simple tips to help you declutter and find the most sustainable solutions for your full wardrobe.

  1. Does this item bring me happiness?

Marie Kondo is a true decluttering icon. One of her steps is to ask yourself, does this item bring me happiness? When I look in my closet, I see an array of memories. The black dress with a studded collar that I wore to my hula halau’s 35th Anniversary Lunch, the white tee that my mother bought me from her trip to France, my senior year prom dress that I spent $500 on, and so much more! But then, there are pieces that I truly attempt to wear, but end up changing because I don’t like the way it looks on me. Throw all of these pieces on your floor to allow your closet or dresser to be filled with just the pieces that bring you happiness.

  1. Who would love these?

Just because some pieces didn’t bring you happiness, doesn’t mean that they won’t bring somebody else some joy. I have a list of friends and family that I would give clothes to. With all the items you threw on the floor earlier, fold them up again and put them in some paper bags. Coordinate with your friends or family and let them have the opportunity to find their new favorite pieces from your closet. The lifetime of your clothing can live out longer! You can even donate your clothes to a local charity or thrift shop like the Salvation Army, Goodwill, or the Boys and Girls Club.

  1. Do I have to fill my closet with more now?

Absolutely not! There’s no rule that says that you have to fill the space when you cleanse. But there is also nothing wrong if you want to search for new pieces. Take a look at last month’s blog post on ‘What is Sustainable Fashion’ to help you make mindful purchases and enjoy the experience!

Now go and clean up your space to feel refreshed in time for Spring!
